I wanted to name a daughter Tundra.

[–] StThicket@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago

My son's class have girls with names like Savannah, Mali and Marina. I find it way too funny.

Taiga's a Japanese name, though uncommon

What are you doing steppe nomad?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Using flat terrain to facilitate fast movement and colonization. I sure hope no one invents a way to kill me while I descend on your village

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

🎶 One of these things is not like the others 🎶

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 14 points 2 days ago

I guess cause when the name was made, a good place for a battle was a big ole field. (Speculation)

[–] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago

Yeah, what the fuck?

A plain is mostly grasses. Meadows, fields, and battlefields have flowers.

And love can bloom on them.

Taiga became popular in 2022. Definitely looking forward to seeing that one around. So many Ice Queen jokes.

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Marsha Marsha Marsha

[–] SacredHeartAttack@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I know a kid named River 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I do as well. She's a real badass too

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And she can kill you with her brain.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We're possibly talking about different people, unless the River I know has latent superpowers that I'm unaware of.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 16 points 2 days ago

I'm thinking of River Tam, from Firefly.

Whether she can or can't do that is still debatable, but she did tell Jayne she could. And she can read minds, so it's not entirely out of the question...

Xeric Shrubland is definitely a LOTR character.

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Xeric as a name actually sounds kinda badass

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

looks like a modernized version of an old english name, something like "Serric"

lo Serric, i knew him well

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 19 points 3 days ago

If I ever see it as a name I'm just going to assume it's someone who was named Eric by his parents and had it changed to be edgier when he was fourteen

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 29 points 3 days ago

Taiga is a nice name too

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 14 points 2 days ago

In Spanish, Selva (rainforest) is a somewhat common girl's name

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 20 points 2 days ago

Does Forest not count? Gump is sad.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

What about For(r)est Gump?

[–] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Tangent but.. Wow it didn’t even occur to me that paludariums were so named because that’s the type of ecosystem they are mimicking, rather than some guy named Paul invented a cool-style terrarium/aquarium merger.. (example below)

TIL!

Well, Tundra is already in use. Forest is more common than you know. Arid would work if it didn't mean what it does.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not biomes but ...

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname tho.

South wetlands is reserved only for the exceptionally hot individuals.

[–] Venator 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname

Is it though?

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago

only if they're a single-prop airplane enthusiast

[–] nailbar@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 days ago

Accepted by half of the two individuals involved

[–] mrmacduggan@lemmy.ml 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Theorycrafting this - Tundra would be a nice name. So would Mesa, Fen, and Delta.

Sitting behind these hairdos in class and at the theater definitely sucked back in the 80's.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I still don't know how open flames for cigarettes and big hair co-existed.

[–] shai_hulud@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

I'm going to change my name to Peat Bog

[–] wax@feddit.nu 12 points 2 days ago

Xeric Shrubland is going to Google his name in 16 years and dedicate his life to hunting you down.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 12 points 3 days ago (4 children)

If I have a daughter, I'll name her Swamp Thing.

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Not Man-Thing?

Xeric sounds kind of like a cool name to give a kid if you want that kid to suffer for their entire life.

But then again they could rise above it and become a cool person, maybe not quite on the level of Streetlamp leMoose but close.
