Off topic, but shout out to the Ubuntu font for looking so nice. Love to see someone using it in the wild

[–] BoosBeau@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Off topic, but how many asses have you assassinated?

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 18 hours ago

A gentlemen doesn't kill and tell

David, don't you know that you got kicked out of the DNC for sharing such common-sense ideas? The people should have NO say in their leadership, that's the meritocracy... far too obvious /s

Not a meritocracy, a corporatocracy

I had a long conversation with Mitch, he said he doesn't want anyone worrying about him, he's doing fine.

[–] Heikki2@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago

GOP won't vote for it. They already get the benefits and therfore Noone else needs them

Wait a second. This is a meme community so I assume you're joking but... don't you lot have paid sick leave or parental leave?

[–] northernlights@lemmy.today 4 points 18 hours ago

Depends on the state and employer. They're talking about making it mandatory at the federal level.

[–] ComfortableRaspberry@feddit.org 10 points 1 day ago (4 children)

If I got this right, you usually have a limited amount of sick days in the US. If they're out, you're out of luck.

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 10 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Often times there's no distinction between sick time and leave. So if you take a day off because your sick that's one less day for a vacation.

Some jobs don't even give you leave. You don't work you don't get paid.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

You actually don't have any guaranteed sick leave. Some companies will give a few days to you for exclusive sick leave, some will require you to use your PTO, some (like my current) require a doctor's note for any sick leave use, some don't.

Now you start to understand how COVID spread so fast here.

You're right, and that's IF you're lucky enough to be granted sick leave. It's not a legal requirement. I, for example, have none. When I'm sick I don't get paid.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So if you are contagious, you are forced to spread it?

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 7 points 23 hours ago

Exactly so.

This is so outlandish to me. There are so many studies that show how bad this is, also on an economical level...
Meanwhile my colleagues can even call in sick when their kids are ill.

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 8 points 1 day ago

The modern US is very anti-science 😭

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

That's just so insane. How are people ok with that like, "yeah that's fair, I want more conservatives to run my life because they're making life harder for me and rob me of any sense of reciprocal goodwill towards society! USA USA USA!"

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, the Mitch act would be for paid DEAD leave.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

it also counts if hes an undead lich.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Paid parental and sick leave isn't law there? I thought you guys had at least that one.

Often the government also pays for parental leave. Places like Australia it's up to 26 weeks at minimum wage to help families settle in with newborns and new costs.

[–] DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago

In the land of the free it's the companies that are free to do whatever and people have limited rights

[–] hdsrob@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nope.

At the federal level, there's no laws covering any paid time off for anything. Sick, vacation, holiday's, parental, etc.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

We TECHNICALLY have parental leave, but COBRA is hedged in with so many caveats it's useless for a lot of people.

[–] hdsrob@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Yea, but it's not paid (federally), and unpaid leave is only guaranteed for people that work for companies with more than 50 employees.

[–] MrGeneric@lemmy.today 3 points 18 hours ago

And best of luck getting another job to recommend you after taking it

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

So, "temporarily unemployed", basically. Right when people need income the most.

Edit: I more understand the "not in this economy" remark from Idiocracy's intro, when the smarter couple is deciding to hold on having kids. It's obviously a consideration around the developed world, but not really movie-worthy.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Please, no. We should not make all of the workers die and then conceal their deaths.

[–] notsure@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

Medicine In The Caring Home...pays for all prescriptions, doctor and nurse visits, hides actual ability or response time to public, continues to hold contracts far out of date..
