Understanding an argument doesn't mean you agree with it.
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

I think it's actually a major problem in society that people are afraid to understand the opposing viewpoint. They're afraid of being seen as agreeing with it or defending it. It actually helps make a constructive argument if you understand the opposing argument. You need to understand the opposition's reasoning to help them understand your reasoning.
If it doesn't function as a downspout, then it's a grotesque, not a gargoyle.
Vehicle mileage is an antiquated and terrible metric for tracking vehicle health. Engine hours and heat cycles are more accurate.
I don't know anything about vehicles but you just reminded me of something I've recently been thinking about: instead of measuring a movie's success by money made and having to adjust for inflation, why don't we just measure by number of tickets sold?
Pineapple on pizza is great. Here in Poland we call it havaii pizza
My personal favorite combo is pineapple and jalapeno.
My hot take is that 2 toppings on a pizza is the best. Any more just gets weird.

Adding fries to a dish in a (good) restaurant means you didn’t make a complete dish and just added the fries to add carbs/fill people.
-
On that same note: just a piece of meat (steak, spareribs or smth like that) is not a full meal (and don’t you start about adding fries and a salad)

a restaurant is only as good as its vegetarian dishes (some exceptions apply, like restaurants that focus exclusively on meat)
Ironically, I am not a vegetarian ;)
Also not a vegetarian and i agree 100% with your 3rd point. Cooking good vegetarian food requires more skill - to me, meat is like a cheat code for flavour. In my opinion, Indian cuisine offers some of the tastiest veg dishes because they are not adaptations of meat dishes, but their own thing entirely.
I don't think it requires more skill, just more effort. Cut off a chunk of meat and add heat and you're most of the way to a good flavour, while veg dishes usually require a variety of vegetables, each of which requires more prep than the meat did. There are exceptions, but as a general rule of thumb if they're putting the time and effort into doing the vegetarian dishes properly it shows they're doing everything else properly too.
Good french fries don't need ketchup
I don't like ketchup. Been eating fries plain for years. Sometimes with gravy
For me it is a nostalgia thing. I have happy memories that include fries with ketchup, so now they seem naked without.
