I'm excited for all the disposable AAA gaming income that can now go to indie developers.....

You guys are going to monetarily support indie developers right?

[–] Yeller_king@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

There are so many new games coming out that even if you don't want 99% of them you could never play everything you want.

What's really going on here is that most of us are getting old and busy enough to where we genuinely prefer something familiar regardless of the quality of new games.

Dwarf Fortress is 20 years old and still only has half the planned features. Tarn will be working on it until he croaks. Bless that man.

It's kind of blown my mind to learn about the development of that game. UnReal World's similar how it started development in like the 90's and the guys still just keep working on it like a group hobby. Love that for them

Did you see the /NoClip documentary?

My ADHD would never. I'd love to have a forever project, but the unending crave for novelty would never allow me.

The amount of simulations is still looking for its match. Hell, it reminds me of the possible best simulation: Dwarfes are having a party. Someone spills their beer. A cat walks through the beer puddle. The cat cleans its paws. The cat becomes drunk from the beer on its paws.

The graphic is rather old, even the steam version or with "Lazy Newb Pack", but it is still !!FUN!!.

yet another shout out for Space Station 14, a fully open source almost-massively multiplayer game with tons of forks being actively developed with lots of cross pollination of ideas and mechanics between them.

outrageously fun gameplay, totally free, easily modified, decently easy to set up ones own server

also totally cross platform between linux, mac, and windows

Right now is the best time to play old games. Retro gaming handhelds have never been better, and honestly there's little to improve in them at this point.

Get yourself a retro handheld for as little as $100, that will feel more premium than a Steam Deck, and start playing games that came out before you were born.

I've genuinely forgotten how bad the current video game industry is, because I'm so busy having a blast with older/retro titles.

Highly recommend to all gamers.

You can check out what handheld console would fit you best here: https://retrocatalog.com/

:o

that sounds like an amazing project. i have literally been thinking just yesterday whether i could ever get back the nostalgic (and often crappily made xD) flash games of my youth.

xD and the video on the project website is so iconic xD literally uses music from redacted (guess the game yourself :)).

question: does anyone have a backup of the flashpoint archive itself? in case that one goes down (so, double backup)

[–] Metype@pawb.social 6 points 2 days ago

Flashpoint is amazing!

I'd still miss the culturally/socially relevant and intellectual games like Life is strange and Silent Hill.

Do I actually have time and energy to play them? No.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 59 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

I'm still playing Rimworld

Regardless, I never spend more than $20 on a game, wait for the "Game of the Year Platinum Super Edition" to go on sale. It works every time!

[–] Dave 2 points 2 days ago

I normally do that, but I got Baldur's Gate I think within it's first year, and the thing that sold me is they put it DRM free on GOG super early. Normally you have to wait 15 years to get a AAA game on GOG, so I wanted to support that decision to put it there early.

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 21 points 3 days ago

Same. Got the base Cyberpunk 2077 game for $18. And then got the dlc for $18. Best $36 I've spent on a game in a long time.

I mean Warcraft II is still the shit. As is classic doom, carmageddon, Aoe,... you name it.

[–] Waffelmeister@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

I still play Warcraft III - Frozzen Throne. So many custom maps. I've got enough gaming content for another 10 years.

Indie devs are fucking killing it, though. A lot of bangers have been coming out.

I’m currently obsessed with How Many Dudes? That game is so much fun.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 35 points 3 days ago (11 children)

All hail the ability to emulate console games up to a certain generation well enough on even lower end hardware.

Ain't no other way to officially enjoy classics like Tony Hawk Pro Skater ( best on Dreamcast IMO ). Probably one of the greatest skater games, just behind a game like Skate 2. But maybe that's the nostalgia talking...

Gaming industry collapse doesn't sound good, I've been liking indie games a lot.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Anyone has some runescape-like game to recommend?

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Skyrim, Fallout NV, Diablo II, modded to fuck Dungeon Keeper, Age Of Empires II, so many more. I’m set for life

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 48 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (5 children)

Modded to What?

Sounds dope, though. Enjoy your peace, king

Kingdom Hearts II is 22 years old. Just picked it back up today.

Still fucking rips.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 2 days ago

laughs in DKFX

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I mostly play minecraft and indies, i am relatively safe lmao, what can happen? Mojang stop to update the game? Great now everyone will make mods on the same version lol

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

lmao, what can happen?

Microsoft, a company i never did business with during my purchase of Minecraft, stole my copy because I didnt learn about the account migration in time.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As said, you can still play the game without account on Java edition as of now (you have to either use a 3rd party launcher or launch the game from the terminal though)

Anyway, i don't know how the fuck Microsoft wasn't sued for that ""incident""

[–] gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

you have to either use a 3rd party launcher or launch the game from the terminal though

i'm pretty sure that both are illegal btw

if you're interested in this, somebody made an open source re-implementation of it with excellent modding abilities.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No it"s not illegal, they don't even break the EULA or TOS in anyway, maybe it does if you never bough a license for the game but that's it;

I am not really interessed in Luanti tbh, it does not have the same mods or content

(Side note: i did read the entire EULA btw)

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago (4 children)

????? so i have some bad news about minecraft...

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

That there's an open source alternative which is gaining momentum?

Edit: oh bad news the Microsoft

Retro game prices have been skyrocketing too. Everything's kinda fucked.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 3 days ago

Just soft mod your console or get a flash cart and sail the high seas.
