Genuine question, how does a municipal government pass and enforce a law like this? Where I live I don't think a municipal government could do this (both practically and legally)

Who does this rule apply to and how would the cit y enforce it?

This should be illegal everywhere but if you're in a place where it's not, you can still make these fuckers eat a chargeback fee while getting all your money back if you go through your bank or credit card company to show them documentation that they're effectively holding you financially hostage by ignoring your requests to cancel and making cancellation inaccessible.

I got $800 back from a fraudulent "home warranty" from AHS this way and it was a pretty easy process via Visa. Even better that they got fined on top of being forced to give me a refund!

I had a local company start ignoring my calls and emails after I send a request to cancel. I charged them back for one charge and then they charged me again. Here using someone's credit card without authorization is wire fraud. Then they charged me a third time. Now they have 2 wire fraud charges and credit cards companies won't take payment from them. They will most likely beat the criminal charges because corperations can basically steal from you without consequences but I had to do like 10 calls to the charge dispute department and by call 6 the agent I was dealing with was so pissed they told me they are going to blacklist them because it was a mystery how they were able to charge me repeatedly and they just needed to make it stop.

If only. That natural born citizen thing gets in the way unfortunately.

But this guy keeps proving that politics done right can actually help people. Who knew that was possible?

[-] darthelmet@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

The thing to remember is Mamdani's success isn't just him being such a great guy. Sure he's nice and charismatic, but he wouldn't be possible without the massive grassroots organizing that got him elected. He couldn't be pumping out these policy wins without the support of a great cabinet of passionate people lending their expertise to make all this happen.

It might be hard to replicate Mamdani's raw charisma, but we can and must replicate that movement for any office we hope to achieve. It is harder to do this on a national level though, but we already almost did it with Bernie, and the movement's only grown since then.

Trump is constitutionally barred from running again and is definitely going to run in 2028. There are no rules anymore, everyone has been using the constitution as toilet paper for decades.

[-] billwashere@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

I hate how true this is.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 9 points 15 hours ago

Oh no, I'm not gonna keep caring about the law after the Right has stopped. We can elect him and then he can make an executive order allowing it, and nobody will stop him.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 13 hours ago

It might be the first city, but the state of California has had this for many many years. It’s a great law.

Mandami is like Trump, you hear about something he does every day, but it doesn't make you wanna jump off a highway onto a much lower highway exclusively for tractor trailers, in Phoenix.

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

But won't anyone think of all the lost revenue for these companies who purposely made it exceptionally difficult to cancel subscriptions

[-] Snapz@lemmy.world 22 points 22 hours ago

Just a friendly reminder that your city could be doing any of this right now as well.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 9 hours ago

It would have less effect. Small towns would probably just be geoblocked. NYC has more people than a majority of states.

It's pretty crazy that the most no-duh common-sense policies solely exist under the banner of "radical communism." Almost makes one question the political compass.

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 4 points 12 hours ago

The political compass is fine, it's just the US which has sawed off the outer third of the left side x-axis, while eliminating the y-axis altogether, bunching authoritarian and libertarian groups into a constantly infighting sack of cats.

[-] chrash0@lemmy.world 47 points 1 day ago

“radical communism” 🙄

the GOP and even a lot of people on “the left” in the US couldn’t give you half the description of what communism is. this regulation falls squarely under classical Liberalism, and despite their squawking about Libertarianism or whatever Republicans act more like Liberals than their ideology poisoned brains could comprehend.

[-] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 16 points 1 day ago

Exactly. This type of thing is such obvious low hanging fruit quick win for any government.

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 143 points 1 day ago

This was a federal rule, one guess who undid it.

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

You guessed wrong. There are now two doors in front of you, one leads to hell. Choose wisely.

Was it Orange Foolius?

[-] Kirk@startrek.website 56 points 1 day ago

And Lina Khan is in NYC now!

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 94 points 1 day ago

So set my VPN to NYC, got it

[-] LeighWeighTacoma@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

A lot of them probably will require proof of address like a lot with the California laws.

[-] Carl@anarchist.nexus 56 points 1 day ago

And it’ll only take one NYC resident to challenge that before the requirement is outlawed. If it doesn’t require proof of address to sign up, it shouldn’t require proof of address to cancel.

[-] jtrek@startrek.website 33 points 1 day ago

This is refreshing. I'm so tired of right wing people being like "the government can't do anything right and I'm going to prove it by sabotaging and starving the government".

[-] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 10 points 21 hours ago

Imagine what we could have if we ran the government to help people.

Big Kwame does it again

Are they going to try to force compliance on companies outside of NY? Even if they could, will we sites just block NY IP addresses? How does this work?

[-] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 9 points 1 day ago

If similar to equivalent state regs, when access to customers residing in that market is gated by compliance and subject to lawsuits or ban, the first phase of business-side operations change is immediately setting up minimum compliance workflow like a special webpage coupled with countermeasures (like proof of residency; IP historically difficult in court but has been used successfully for state-specific age gating) and boundary testing cycles. With especially large markets, however, the overhead associated with maintaining multiple separate workflows fails the efficiency test and the workflows are merged, which is how everyone tends to benefit from pro-consumer laws like GDPR.
