my company has hired 3 people in the past month and is looking for 5 new folks.

it's not tech though. it's entry level research and we pay like 45K to start.

we haven't hired anyone since 2023. all our tech staff have been working here for 10+ years and we only one one tech position like every 5 years.

personally i think the economic forecasts are kinda dumb. There is still a lot of demand out there and once mid-terms are over I think the economy will start growing again, esp if they can fix Trumps stupid shit that has really killed growth.

AI bubble will pop but there is still massive demand in other sectors of the economy. Try working for a healthcare company. there are so many great jobs outside of big tech, but the salaries will be lower. our senior programmer is making like 160K, not 350-500K. way too many folks are really arrogant about their salary expectations

the people i went to grad school were smart and nice people who were mostly there for the same purpose I was, hence i became close with them and it was cool. only folks in my life who didn't mock me for reading and studying and learning shit. they all got married to each other and had kids and moved to rural areas and I visit them once every few years.

have had lots of other friends past and present but without that core level of common interest, values, and respect, they pretty much all withered and no longer became worthwhile. I really lose interest in being friendly with people when they show themselves to be spiteful, selfish, and petty.

No, it's because it's considered chivalrous for the man to put himself between the street and his woman to protect her.

It's 19th century crap that dummies still think is relevant, and there are many of them out there.

I've been on this date dozens of times. Had many women ask me if I'm poor and become totally disgusted with me when is said I used to be as a child.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 0 points 6 hours ago

all the time.

have you tried being attractive?

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

algos and real people both basically don't understand my interests and think i'm a weirdo for them.

i love it.

internet is just for filling the void at work where I can't engage in any productive personal interests, because i'm on company time.

human contact is what makes me go insane though.

not contacting with others is how I feel sane.

I had a lot of nice girlfriends and really fun nice dates from like 2012-2018. Like dozens and dozens.

At least, until they were honest about stuff and they were not so nice. But while they were lying to me the relationships were often wonderful. and I'd have totally married a few of those women had they not been lying to me about who they were.

I really will never understand why folks lie in relationships. Seems like the most surefire way to guarantee you are wasting your time.

that reminds me of one date I had where this woman was super nice and super honest and at the end of the date she told me straight up she was not interested in seeing me again but thank you for spending time with her. It was the the nicest and most pleasant rejection I have ever received in my life. I was not interested in her either, but I wanted to kiss her for being so mature and grown up and assertive. The total opposite of like 99% people I meet who are so passive, and often weird and hostile when they reject you or feel rejected. I've never met anyone else who rejected me and made it so normal and pleasant. It's sad that more folks can't be like her, instead of the normal passive-aggression nonsense where they profess how great it was and they can't wait to see you again and tell you to call them but then ghost or become hostile if you follow up.

nothing. i don't use the internet to avoid work. i use it to fill in the void between things at work.

yeah no shit. this place desperately needs folks who aren't constantly dooming and blaming the world for their personal woes.

my life is great.

not responsible for anyone else's choices. and sick of weirdos who try to tell me i am, i notice such folks tend to be very unhappy with their own life choices and tend to blame other folks for them rather than take make better choices for themselves.

yeah i expect to die alone. i have no close family, just relatives who kind of tolerate me but think I'm disturbed because I am not a Standard American Male. Also can't seem to find any romantic partners that last, just ones that hate me for not being a a doctor or finance bro of their dreams.

hopefully just drop dead one day in the woods doing what i love from a heart attack, and not wasting away mentally from alzheimers, which is my other most likely fate.

my grand parents died while sleeping. my dad died in a hospital choking to death from fluid in his lungs and heart failure, but not before letting me know what a disappoint I was to him. he was a piece of shit human being.

What kind of ads or 'suggested' content gets pushed to you the most on the internet? Make up your new identity based on the ad/suggested content you get served the most.

Algorithm(s) thinks I'm a menopausal Latina woman who loves cats, and wants to drive a truck/SUV. I also get a ton of of the 'is your boyfriend/husband abusing you?' type of therapy-talk content, which is hilarious.

Most of my ads are for menstrual products and std/hormone pharma drugs, then it's a mix of cat/pet product ads and lots of truck/suv ads. At least 1/3 are in spanish.

Only one of these that is remotely accurate is I do have a cat.

Online or offline. News keeps reporting about loneliness and disconnection, but in my experience it's just that it's harder to interact with people in a civil way because they are so hostile, angry, and arrogantly convinced their viewpoints and experiences are the only legitimate ones.

Not to mention the lack of civility towards servers and other service workers. I can't recall if I was just indifferent 10 years ago, but on a almost daily basis it blows my mind how openly rude many people are to servers and such, which seemed like a much more rare thing when I was younger.

I'm weird, but I like colors and real wood tones. It just kind of hurts me to see literally everyone it seems, live in this 'aesthetic' where everything is pure white walls and grey fake wood floors. And how this scheme has taken over every home, office, and retail space.

I guess it's the equivalent of how all 80% cars are gray scale now? (black, white, or a gray/silver shade). Why has color become so 'offensive' the past decade?

It's so bad that I've had folks tell me my blue car is 'weird'. and my home, which is wood trimmed/floored with maple stained wood, and off-white tints in each room, is 'gross'. My bedroom's are robin's egg blue, and my kitchen and living room are an off white yellow. I love it, especially at night when I use the low-temp lighting and it's warm instead of HARSH. Folks keep telling me how 'old' it looks and that i need to repaint everything BRIGHT white and then put that shitty grey flooring over everything. I hate them.

As in under 18, legally employed and paying taxes and all that.

Basically, I can't figure out the appeal or Tiktok and other types of repetitive media consumption where you are doing the same thing over and over and over. I remember trying it out and just being so bored and frustrated with the entire thing.

I feel the same way about TV shows, and restaurants and all that too. Going to the same place every Friday night and getting the same order and watching the same TV show on repeat just sounds like hell to me.

Or hanging out and talking about the same topics over and over and over, with never a new or novel thing to say, drinking the same beer/wine/cocktail over and over.

What is the appeal of living this way?

When did you first see it, and what did you think?

Was it your first/only anime if you did see it?

inspired by LCL vs FCL.

Disclosure: I've traveled and I've lived abroad in two different countries and been dozens of places outside of my 'home'.

But I don't get this obsession people have with travel being the uber alles thing you can do and how if you don't do it all the time or as much as possible you are a ignorant incurious person. I don't see my travel as being this amazing thing... it was just a nice thing that I did and frankly I don't remember very much about it and what I do remember I don't think is a more important memory than lots of other things I did in life.

I don't think I am superior or 'worldly' because of it compared to someone who has never traveled abroad. But it is an extremely common belief/attitude I encounter on a regular basis and it confuses the hell out of me. I've met plenty of people that just go on the attack when you don't want to 'exchange amazing travel stories' with them or daydream with them about all the places you'd like to go. There are some places I'd like to go, but again, it's not a big deal to me that I see it as some big important part of my life and I certain do not condescend towards people who aren't as 'well traveled' as I am like it's some contest or achievement.
