Just had a wee a shake in Christchurch, only 3.4 but quite close to where I am and relatively shallow. Was a noisy one too, had the heartrate going for a little bit! Ick. I don't like these reminders.

Got an idea for next month's banner?
Survey on the boat is supposed to be this week but there is a weather system developing off the coast and it’s bringing high winds and rough seas. Not very conducive to a haul out and sea trial so we may have to delay it to the following week, which will push back everything else with the purchase and getting on board. Ah well, they say you shouldn’t sail to a schedule, I guess you shouldn’t try buying a sailboat to a schedule either!
Last few days to fill in the Community Census!
I've also had a bit of a look at the next minor release of Lemmy, 0.19.4. Some chatter about it being more CPU intensive than the last one, but I haven't heard of any other issues. I am always keen to hear if others see anything about issues!
I originally thought we would need a decent amount of downtime as the official instructions direct you to export the database and import it into an upgraded database version, but I've since found that postgres lets you do an in-place upgrade, and at least one Lemmy instance has already done this without issue, so we should be able to get away with only a minute or two of downtime.
I'm thinking I will update the database on it's own first, then do the 0.19.4 update a bit later. Both should be pretty quick so if you notice any downtime over the weekend, it might be that (or it might not be...). I try to put any updates on the Matrix chat so if you haven't joined, there are instructions here.
We’ve got a huge power outage up here in the Far North, seems there’s a Transpower problem cutting off power to the whole of the Far North.
Luckily we have a UPS for Internet until the battery runs down.
Edit: It’s still off after 2 hours. Apparently a transmission pylon tower collapsed, no further info, but oh boy, this will likely take a while to fix I suspect.
Edit2: Power came back on after around 5 hours.
Moved into our new house and discovered 2 leaks in the recently refurbished bathroom. Anybody got recommendations for a decent plumber in Auckland?
Oooh, fancy internal water feature! I don't have any recommendations for you, just here to make a dumb comment 😋
Highly recommend no one buys Woolworths Essential’s brand Mayonnaise. Absolutely disgusting, looked like glue and also super sweet. I realised after the fact it’s vegan, so no eggs.. Mayo with no eggs! Even my Mayo/Aioli loving kid thought it was gross.
Not sure what to do with the jar of it now, feels wasteful to throw it away though 🤮
I haven't really got mayo preferences but I have heard the Best Foods one is the best. It seems to come in a plastic container when I look online but the one in our fridge is a glass jar. Not sure if there's a difference.
I'm normally pretty careful about trying not to waste food, but if it's so bad it's not edible, then just throw it away. It's one jar, and you're not going to buy it again. No point putting someone else through that just for the sake of not throwing it out.
I was thinking it could be used for cooking since it's mainly oil, but I'm thinking the amount of sugar might not work well. I've seen people use it on the outside of grilled cheese sandwiches to crisp it up. Otherwise into the compost it goes!
Maybe you could make a mayonnaise cake? https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/7423/mayonnaise-cake-i/
Oh this is a good idea! Guessing the mayo can work as a replacement for the oil or butter in baking recipes
Well if you're really brave, fat and sugar are key components of ice cream!
Sounds like a good way to ruin a good ice cream though.
Haha could be a good prank though!
Bought my tickets to go visit my family in September. Spending that much always freaks me out even though I know I can afford it
Exciting! If you need to apply for an NZ passport, do it now, they used to issue them in a couple of days and now it's a couple of months!
Are you having a nice long visit or just a quick trip? I'm assuming overseas since people don't usually freak out over buying a bus ticket. Usually.
Thanks for the warning. Luckily my passport is good for several years yet. It's gonna be weird going from early spring to early autumn though.
Haha yeah, but autumn can be nicer weather than spring in a lot of places so hopefully you get a weather upgrade.
Yeah should be warmer and drier
