Rules:

  1. The mods are fallible; if you've been banned or had a post/comment removed, please appeal.
  2. Off-topic posts will be removed. If you don't know what "Leopards ate my Face" is, try reading this post.
  3. If the reason your post meets Rule 1 isn't in the source, you must add a source in the post body (not the comments) to explain this. If the reason is in the source but is tedious to find (e.g. in a lengthy video), you must add an explanation for where it is.
  4. Posts should use high-quality sources (for a rough idea, check out this list), and posts should retain the title (if one exists) from works like news articles, videos, etc. You may (but need not) edit your post if the source changes the title. (If you're only using an excerpt from an article that's otherwise not about LAMF, you can use the quote in the title.) Yes, but it's like the restaurant decided that everyone else wanted turd soup regardless of what they had ordered. So much so in fact, that the stench is now permeating into the neighboring coffee shop and chip truck.

Oh, good. I was worried what my opinion should be and hadn't realized how much easier it is to just copy the opinion of someone you see on TV.

Guy on Left Side of the Ship: "Well, I just don't feel bad for the people on the right side of the ship"

Guy on the Right Side of the Ship: "I'm going to make this thing so much more leaky! You haven't seen how leaky I'm going to make it."

I love watching people get what they deserve. But I worry we've created a world where its not possible to change your stance on something or admit you were wrong. Like something from the Art of War that says you shouldn't surround your enemy completely or they will fight harder since escape isn't an option. Even if you don't intend for them to escape, merely thinking they can wont cause them to fight as hard.

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 9 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

I mean yeah but the dude rapes children so he needs to be in prison. The ideal answer would have been for his parents to have raised him better but that ship sailed a long time ago.

Art of War is a little inapplicable here because in that book, there's an assumption the enemy isn't out to destroy the whole world, but trump really has no qualms about destroying everything if that's what it takes for him to keep his freedom despite his horrific crimes.

[–] Feidry@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

This, unfortunately, is the Truth of the situation.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

I'll say: it really seems like that call is coming from inside the house. Lots of former conservatives can get by in leftist spaces by just not being a conservative when asked about their opinions. If you can laugh at who you used to be you can absolutely be a reformed conservative. Maybe you have to be a few years removed from who you used to be but I've seen it, I know people who have gone through exactly that and they're as left as anyone now. Mostly because being a leftist means engaging with and being in the normal world.

But if you're in a conservative environment even the smallest dissent can be seen as fully treasonous. It spirals into hysteria and we see how conservatives have to live in an alternate reality to stay in the in-group.

[–] Clutter@sh.itjust.works 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

But they are not admitting they where wrong... They are complaining Trump didn't deliver them the riches they where promised.

They are still bigoted assholes.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

There are definitely those people, along with ones who were actively harmed by Trump when they thought he would only hurt minorities or whatever.

But I think there's people out there who only vote R cuz their parents do and they're in a small conservative town in the country.

If people flip from R to D its like a x2 effect. Not only are R's getting less votes but D's are getting more. Idk. Maybe everyone is already set in their ways or will switch on their own eventually.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 8 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

They don’t want to escape, though.

They’re in a prison of their own design.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

also they are only admitting they were wrong, after they get fucked by the hate policies they thought were only going to be used against brown people.

and they expect to be treated like the actual victims of those policies, and receive care, and concern, and comfort, and support, about the egregious wrongs they suffered, just like they've seen the actual victims of these policies get time and time again.

and they don't get it, because they are the stupid cunts that supported all that shit, voted for all that shit, and still'd be fighting for all that shit if it hadnt suddenly affected them.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Ok thats super fair and I didn't consider. Like people who wanted ICE until their wife got deported.

It just sucks cuz I'm sure there are decent people who are only conservative and vote that way cuz their parents did and that's how it's always been for them. Kind of like religion.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

No. That ship sailed 10 years ago. It's impossible for any good people to still call themselves Republican.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

its also the fact that they pretend that they are good, decent, moral, godly people, while literally bending over the table and buttering up their butt holes for people who do the exact opposite that their precious bible says.

Theres a lot of reasons why people are tired of hypocritical republican faux-victims and their constant whinging and demands for support and sympathy.

[–] METATRONSTUDENT@lemmy.today 3 points 10 hours ago

He also said once committed to an act there is no turning back.

[–] OpenPassageways@programming.dev 2 points 10 hours ago

Yeah... for the most part they just double down. You can point out the war in Iran that they supposedly didn't want, the deficits they supposedly wanted to reduce, the prices that they thought would go down with tariffs somehow, and they will just say that doesn't matter because the Democrats were going to turn their boys into girls.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I worry we’ve created a world where its not possible to change your stance on something or admit you were wrong.

Are you kidding? It is comically easy to just change sides, announce you have always believed everything about the side your own, and begin heckling the people on the original side by calling them idiots and assholes. Just roll up another account. Or be Tucker Carlson.

Nobody will care, so long as your caustic remarks and smug self-aggrandizement and self-pitying doomerism jerks your audience off the right way.

Like something from the Art of War that says you shouldn’t surround your enemy completely or they will fight harder since escape isn’t an option.

The problem isn't that Liberals have somehow backed Conservatives into a corner. The problem is that Conservatives effectively make up a Liberal to be afraid of and regularly sell their voter base on being terrified of the Dark Brandon Ultra-Left Anarcho-Chinese Muslim Tankie hiding behind the milquetoast corporate centrist who agrees with them on 90% of public policy.

When you've built a fantasy world for your voters to live in, the best way to keep them there is to tell a bunch of horror stories about what's outside the echo chamber.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Im not saying liberals have literally backed maga into a corner with no escape. It was just an analogy.

And are you kidding? Are you seeing maga declare themselves liberal in droves? There's supposed to be a "blue wave" coming for midterms so I guess we'll wait and see. But if there is a blue wave id think it's because maga are upset and not going out to support trump, not that they've all become liberals.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Im not saying liberals have literally backed maga into a corner with no escape.

I agree. If anything, they've done the opposite. The MAGA crowd has received every out, second chance, and pardon legally possible.

Are you seeing maga declare themselves liberal in droves?

Plenty of #NeverTrump Republicans have been piling in to the Liberal Party for over a decade. Then they show up and complain that the party has too many liberals in it.

But if there is a blue wave id think it’s because maga are upset and not going out to support trump, not that they’ve all become liberals.

Years when Trump isn't on the ballot tend to see depressed GOP turnout.

[–] noahm@lemmy.world 16 points 14 hours ago (4 children)

Do keep in mind that Trump still enjoys something like 90+% approval among Republicans. Some people remain convinced that they like turd soup.

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

it's dipped these days to "only" 81-82%. Which is a big drop, but still way too damn high. Propoganda is crazy.

The supposed "independents" are where his numbers truly cratered. Basically drove his entire approval rating since Democratic approval started at like... 6%.

Its white supremacy - There are plenty that don't regret theur choices because they are either still unaffected because they are closer to the white supremacist ideal (affluent, non marginilized white men) or think they will soon become those men (temporarily embarrassed non marginilized white men that aren't afluent) or they think they are the exception to the rule (tokenized minorities and white women, gay white me, etc who are only tokenized as long as they are useful).

I wish we could raise white people's class consciousness and sense of solidarity with all working people

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 11 points 15 hours ago (5 children)

Millions of black and latino voters choose Trump. Latinos tipped the scale away from Democrats.

But there is a long bizarre history of immigrant groups immediately shitting on other immigrants.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago

Because Democrats don't give a shit about working class people, and use marginalized people as tokens. "You'll vote for us because Republicans actively hate you." Seriously the amount of contempt Democrats seem to have for their own base is alarming.

So Latino voters vote on other things, like abortion. Being mostly Catholic this tends to split that group up. Moreso because the DNC refuses to support down ballot Democrats that don't go hard for abortion.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 5 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (4 children)

It's cuz those people got theirs and now they want to close the gate, same as the current cons, theyre to dumb to realized that once they do get that wish, they'll be the next group of people the cons will focus on getting rid off since current day concurvatism exclusicly focus on exclusion. I don't like a shitload of foreigners migrating out into a country like what happened here in canada during Justin's reign just so they can cover cheap labor and exclude younger workers but it's stupid for them to think they won't be persecuted by people like this and can't understand that these people aren't concervatives, theyre fascists.

I agree with a lot of what you said but the fact is 46% of Latino voters chose trump too. The fact is the billionaire owed propaganda machine is very effective at keeping us divided and distracted

[–] impairedimperator@lemmy.zip 9 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

There are definitely non-white white supremacists...

I ordered the TURD SOUP and all I got was TURD in my SOUP! I HATE eating Turds! It's INHUMANE to eat TURDS! Would DEFINITELY Order Turd Soup AGAIN!

-LITERALLY Republican Voters!

[–] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 6 points 15 hours ago

How were they supposed to know there were turds in it?? There were NO indications!

I was talking to someone and they said "oh man this person Trump worked with turned out to be an evil scammer. So did this person. And these 20 other people. And also Jeffery Epstein." I'm like huh wow he must just be really unlucky then! No other explanation!

Half was ok with turd soup as long as liberals got turd soup too. Owning the libs was priority. The other half thought they were ordering turd soup for the others and not them, and then were surprised when everyone gets turd soup.

[–] human@slrpnk.net 243 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Also they ordered it for the whole restaurant and assumed all the turds would be in other people's bowls.

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 41 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Then they wrote a review: "Turds in my soup! I was told they would only be in brown people's soup! Please do something about this! This is still my favorite restaurant though, would definitely eat again."

mmmm, turds 🤤

[–] moondoggie@lemmy.world 29 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

“I mean, I know I’m brown, but it’s supposed to be in the other brown people’s soup.”

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 5 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Oh yeah, that too. "But I voted Republican for years and always pointed at people poorer & browner than me! You can't deport me!"

edit: sorry, lost the restaurant critic role there.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

As a non-American, it's like sitting in a regular restaurant trying to have lunch but the entire place stinks like shit from the Turd Soup Restaurant down the street.

[–] human@slrpnk.net 4 points 6 hours ago

And that turd soup restaurant sends unsolicited free samples to Venezuelan and Iranian restaurants in the neighborhood and the people working at the Iranian restaurant see it and throw up all over a narrow section of sidewalk that's the only way in and out of the area.

Then they blame the turd in the soup on the democrats and lefties. Meanwhile the turd brags how people are eating his shit up.

[–] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 7 points 15 hours ago

It's the standard "my enemies are so unbelievably stupid that they can't do anything correctly and are utterly incompetent, but also they are smart enough that they are sabotaging us at every corner in ways so sophisticated no one can prevent it." Somehow this actually works long term...

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It's hard to feel sympathy for Trump voters in general, but certainly there are some specific Trump voters who might deserve sympathy.

Just as some people are raised racist, homophobic, etc. but change their tune once they actually meet some POC, LGBT people, etc., there will be people out there who have just absorbed general vibes of "Republicans = good economy, Democrats = bad economy" from everyone in their lives and never experienced anything that made them question it. Some people are well-intentioned, but... really dumb and oblivious.
