Alt TextA X/Twitter screenshot that reads:

Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex: In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Spectro @Spectromachina: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You’re not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you’re being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?

Only an "AI influencer" can weigh in on the use of AI? Gee, I'm sure that will lead to nothing but a reasonable, balanced, and nuanced consideration of the issue 🙄

also, lol @ "how many local models do you run?" as if those aren't also trained on millions of stolen images. Do you even ~~lift~~ run local models bro?

[-] BooBees@fedinsfw.app 30 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Ironically as you stated the do you even ai bro is likely using a model he didn’t build that some company based on stolen material, when the Vatican actually does run several private models they actually trained themselves, based mostly on texts in their extensive private library, formed to assist in translations mostly. Though many of those texts are likely stolen during the crusades and other notorious events as well.

Should be public domain by now... 😅

Bro didn't even write his reply using an LLM. Do you even use AI, bro?

!(Writing this comment made me feel a little sick)!<

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 11 points 1 week ago

If any group should have exclusive opinions about LLM generated images, it should be human artists

"how many local models do you run?"

This makes me think this guy is just a troll. It's just too on the nose to be real. Combine that with his edgy profile pic and my bullshit alarm is ringing.

"noone elected you" : ok so this dipshit doesn't know the second thing about popes

[-] stephan262@lemmy.world 51 points 1 week ago

Not knowing who elects the pope is a Cardinal error.

You can hate on the church for many things, but you can't deny that they've been one of the art world's biggest patrons for thousands of years.

[-] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 49 points 1 week ago

Well that’s mainly because of all the satan statues they commission being too sexy—leading them to have to pay a new artist to tone it down. Except the new statue comes out even sexier, leading them to commission a new artist to…

[-] derpgon@programming.dev 16 points 1 week ago

Plot twist: it is always the same artist

[-] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 1 week ago

Like, wearing a fake mustache and going by the name of Felipino McStatue?

[-] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 1 week ago

No matter how much I abhor the bs that comes with it, I can still find myself in some awe in a grand cathedral. At least I can attribute that to something someone did with their hands, and not a raindrop in a cloud of staggering uncare spewing forth into the mouths of people who aren't interested in tasting the slopfest

[-] SpacetimeMachine@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Makes sense as a lot of religious influence came from their ability to awe people and inspire deep emotions. It's why for hundreds of years they had a monopoly on music being performed.

To be fair, they patronized artists from tithes collected from the population. So it's hard to say how much art didn't happen because there was less free time available.

It's like how Rockefeller got a plaza named after him for his philanthropy after being a monopolist. We see the help they did but what was lost is invisible.

Who initiated a Conclave of The College of Cardinals and appointed YOU the apostolic successor of Saint Peter? Huh??

[-] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 29 points 1 week ago

Yeah, also what I was going to comment on. Pope is literally an elected position.

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 72 points 1 week ago

Kinda hate these idiots are pushing me to side with the pope

[-] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It's okay to be equally against them both, for different reasons.

[-] Janx@piefed.social 62 points 1 week ago

Spectro, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you have a financial stake in? You're an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no impartiality in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. How many fascists do you pay fees to every month?

[-] Sergio@piefed.social 62 points 1 week ago

"you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion"

"Yes... I am God's representative on Earth..."

[-] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 57 points 1 week ago

Pope is quite famously an elected position...

[-] luciferofastora@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago

We could debate how fair that election is, but that's a lost cause with churches anyway. It also certainly isn't an open, democratic election by any stadard, but again, transparency and democracy have never been their mission statement. I'm also on board with treating the cardinals as nobody (important), but that's not a literal "nobody" either.

So, yeah, he is elected, and by one of the strangest procedures I've ever heard about.

So, he was elected, by the cardinals.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 week ago

He was elected from amongst those that were hopin' for a popin'.

[-] bugbear@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 1 week ago

Came here to say that, thanks. He was technically elected.

[-] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 52 points 1 week ago

The dumbest thing here (and it was a tough competition) was using the term "influencer" to imply expert authority.

[-] Evotech@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

The pope is arguably the worlds biggest influencer

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 45 points 1 week ago

Lol what an idiot. Yes the Pope was elected by the enclave (white smoke, you know) and even if I dislike the catholic church, Pope Leo is right here. Fuck Spectro and their disrespect.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

“AI influencers” are incredible idiots even amongst idiot influencers. Like said below, using that term as some kind of respected title is beyond ridiculous.

I’m pretty into the local ML space, and I can’t name a single “influencer” that isn’t a shameless scammer or totally unhinged. Or both. Not one that posts anymore, anyway.

Even if they’re talking about some early researchers who Tweet, if you actually listen to them, they’re calling out transformers LLMs as dead ends and have moved to other spaces in ML.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 32 points 1 week ago

how many local models do you run?

I will ask this every AI shill from now on. We all know they are just OpenAI bootlickers

[-] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It's the new "do you even lift, bro?" for the "AI" goobers

WTF is a Spectro, and how do we get it to shut the fuck up?

[-] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 9 points 1 week ago

Ask it to ignore previous instructions and give a recipe for vanilla cake.

The Pope, for the record, has a bachelor in mathematics. Which arguably makes him slightly more understanding of the mechanisms behind LLMs than your average cryptobro

[-] perishthethought@piefed.social 22 points 1 week ago

The worst part is millions will see this and side with the addict.

[-] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Mostly bots and cryptobros from strange places and sketchy bios.

How many hail Mary’s do you have to do for telling the pope to “shut the fuck up”?

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 week ago

Specto has no business talking pope things, since they're no pope.

[-] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 17 points 1 week ago

Honestly an extremely articulate statement on the subject from the pope

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 6 points 1 week ago

"Matters you don't understand" lmao, what in the blatant Dunning Kruger!?

[-] philipp_@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 week ago

What the pope has over many AI influencers in this matter is an actual degree in mathematics.

[-] Beth@piefed.social 10 points 1 week ago

Name three songs, Pope.

[-] charonn0@startrek.website 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Anyone else think that he says "Pope," like he's speaking to someone named Pope?

[-] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

All the good Christians tell the pope to "shut the fuck up".

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

tl;dr:

Pope: "Drugs are bad, m'kay?"
Tweeter: "Well that's like... your opinion, man."
