It's really sad how only one of those arenas is actually named for something other than a sponsor. Madison Square Garden was named after Madison Square, which was named after James Madison, one of the US founding fathers. The original was on Madison avenue. That's a solid name.

The rest of them... who knows where they are. These places change names all the time.

The ridiculously named "Climate Pledge Arena" is in Seattle. It used to be called KeyArena, because a bank named KeyBank bought the naming rights. Before that it was the "Seattle Center Coliseum", before that it was "Washington State Coliseum". It's currently Amazon that owns the naming rights -- you know, one of the many hyperscalers building AI datacenters like crazy. I don't know which part of their climate pledge covers the building of datacenters, but it seems ballsy to make a pledge to destroy the climate and brag about it.

Honestly, these sound like a joke. Intuit Dome? Crypto.com Arena? Macklemore could have slipped a "ChatGPT Forum" or "Yuga Labs Arena" in there and nobody would have noticed. I certainly don't know if the "Kia Forum" is real.

I've lived near Toronto my whole life, and SkyDome was such a great name for the stadium. The roof opens! SkyDome! Then a company bought it, and now it's just "CompanyName Centre". I'm still pissed about it.

Relatedly, there was also a venue called the Air Canada Centre, or ACC. That one was technically named after the airline, Air Canada, but when I was younger I hadn't heard of the airline, and "Air Canada Centre" on its own sounded cool enough it just made sense. Like Air Jordans or Airwalk, it felt like we were putting Air on stuff, and this was in Canada, so Air Canada Centre. It wasn't until they changed it to be named after some other company that I was like "why would they do that, the name was already.... wait what the fuck...? It was always corporate?"

There's an outdoor amphitheater that opened in the 80s outside of Boston that was originally called Great Woods, a pretty good name. Then it became [company name] Center for a few name changes (it's currently xfinity, ugh). I've never heard anyone old enough to remember call it anything but Great Woods.

I think most people do this in general, even when the name was originally corporate to begin with. Tons of people still say Sears Tower, for example.

It's still SkyDome to me.

I'm glad he named the venues that turned it down.

I have just gone from someone who would never go to a Macklemore concert to someone who will pay top dollar for Macklemore tickets. I don't even know what genre this is. Kidsbop or something? Who cares? This guy has earned my deep respect.

We need more major artists to use their platform for good the way this man is doing. Macklemore is setting an example and deserves massive public support.

If he gets blacklisted by LiveNation (which is what this sounds like), and if other major artists decide to also follow suit, wrecking a monopoly could become a nice side-effect to helping stop a genocide.

I'd call it funky melodic hip hop. Kinda like Outkast, Jurassic 5 or Blackaliscious to my ear, but I'm not intensely familiar with it.

Your description just made me interested in more than the politics.

You must've heard Thrift Shop when it was topping the charts, right? As much as the song was played so much that everyone got sick of it, it was for a damn good reason. The beat's a banger, the lyrics and video are funny. Though the beat itself is produced by his former musical partner Ryan Lewis. Macklemore wrote the lyrics though.

Not all of his songs are as memorable as the really big ones, but the man definitely has talent for entertainment, with or without politics being involved.

Yeah, he's good. This boost he's getting is well-deserved, musically. Plus his songs back up his statements, he's not just virtue-signaling or bandwagoning. The Heist is a great album.

"Climate Pledge Arena" as an official name for a stadium sounds like a cruel joke

[-] Dultas@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Maybe they pledged to increase it.

[-] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

Would you believe they have obnoxiously bright lights on all night

Orphan's Own old timey orphan crushing machines.

"If it ain't Orphan's Own, don't crush an orphan with it!"

And just look what the people have to say...

"For us, it's always been orphan's own or nothing, it takes longer, sure, but we'd rather just let those sad little fucker's starve if we can't crush them with the best machine"

Ironically, the public transit to the Crypto.com Arena is excellent.

Who says you need an arena? Go for the American way. Offer a concert at a random dive bar that can only hold 30 people. Then just charge an obscene amount per ticket.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

No. That wouldn’t affect these corporate arena fucks and would raise the market rate of bar shows in general and turn it into another empty scene of influencer attention grab. Keep billboard bands out of bars, there is a musical ecosystem that already exists there that they have no business overtaking. This would also be a fold as far as the actual issue involved goes, these arena owners need to be put on blast, you can’t fight that fight by taking your toys and going somewhere else where they can completely ignore you and keep doing as they do.

Climate Pledge Arena is in Seattle, his hometown. But he knows the area and if he really wants to rile up some resistance do a word of mouth diy concert in Cal Anderson. Also the Climate Pledge Arena has their lights on 24/7 and this has nothing to do with anything but I want to know how much electricity they blow per year while sitting unused

[-] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 6 points 12 hours ago

They have pledged to ruin the climate by using as much power as possible?

[-] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

Climate pledge arena is the first net zero arena though. It offsets stuff by buying renewable energy credits from Seattle city light and also solar arrays and whatnot. But still, it could save about 5% more power by turning the lights off.
