Oppie was only trying to stop Gojira. No-one knew then it would make him stronger than ever instead.

Hiroshima should be required reading

However, it was exceptionally wonderful.

I'll get down voted along with you, but yes it did. I didn't even finish watching it.

[-] g0d0fm15ch13f@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

Let's light a can of gasoline on fire, that'll be a good practical effect that represents the destructive power of nuclear weapons in a movie about the dangers of atomics!

[-] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I honestly didn’t even make it far enough through that snooze fest to reach that scene.

"They used it on a military base to show power and end the war ...right?"

[-] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 hours ago

Well, they were trying to hit military structures. But they were also aware it was going to hit a fuckton of civilian infrastructure.

They were also trying to end the war faster. The USSR had just joined and were making a lot of demands for Japanese territory immediately. The US wanted to avoid a repeat of the partitioning of Germany by having to give the USSR all of Hokkaido. They also weren't aware that Japan was already at the brink of surrender due to fog of war.

On the grey-er side of things, there was a growing sense of... callousness? Inevitability? on the US's side throughout the war. They started out proclaiming that they would only use precision bombing due to the invention of the Norton bomb sight. Only for that bomb sight to still be fairly inaccurate and had to switch to mass bombing. Eventually the US had escalated to firebombing Japanese cities, and the bombing of Tokyo was on par with the bombing of Hiroshima. The big difference was the span of time and number of planes/bombs involved. If the US hadn't developed the atom bombs then they would have just continued the firebombings with damage to Japan not being all that different.

Add to that the fact that there was a lot of decentralized manufacturing in Japanese cities including military manufacturing. Part of this was cultural, in that it was still normal to have your business be in the same building as your home. Some of this is technical, in that Japan hadn't really invested in assembly-line mass manufacturing yet. And some of this is strategic, in that a small bombing raid isn't able to take out all of your manufacturing, plus there's the factors of using civilians as human shields.

All that said, was there some sense of retaliation and racism against Japan that led to the use of atomic bombs? Yes. Was there also motive to use the bombings to scare the USSR? Also yes. Was a large part of escalation to fire bombing and atomic bombs driven by Curtis LeMay (who was a fucking monster and probably the worst person that Columbus, OH ever produced)? Abso-fucking-lutely and he continued to be a giant problem in the US military well after the war.

Rants aside, my overall point is that the atomic bombings weren't black and white given the context of the entire war. Anyone trying to push otherwise is either (most likely) ignorant or lying

Well, they were trying to hit military structures.

The target was a random bridge in the middle of the town

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

It was sorta a military base. They did have POWs there.

Qwi backed off, straightening up again defensively. "Yes, of course. The Death Star was to be used to break up dead planets to allow direct mining of the heavy metals trapped in the core. The World Devastators would be autonomous factories combing asteroids or sterile worlds to produce a wide range of items without polluting inhabited planets."

Han snorted and rolled his eyes. "If you believe that, you’ll believe anything. Listen to their names! Death Star, World Devastator—that doesn’t sound like something for peacetime economic development, does it?"

Qwi scowled and turned her back on it. "Oh, what difference does it make?"

Americans will melt 4 million civilians in a foreign country and then 20 years later write a movie about how bad it made them feel.

[-] dellish@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

I'm looking forward to the sequel "Afghanistan made me do it" and spin-off "Of course Iraq is involved, just believe me bro"

"Yellow Cake: The Movie"

[-] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 12 points 9 hours ago

Excerpt from a GTA radio show that's a parody of Rush Limbaugh and maybe a little Alex Jones.

Y'know, I'm a man who believes in the American dream. I r-, I-I really do. And that dream is – I'm in charge, and if you don't like what I'm saying, then I'm gonna make a wise-crack, a-and drop a bomb on ya! That's it, that, for me, is the i-i-s the American dream, okay? And then maybe get a-a-a country artist to sing a song about it then have me walkin' around in slow motion. Th-Thats the fully realised dream, y'know then you could maybe make a movie about me doing that or we could do action figurines and then, myself making a movie about blowing the shit out of you while I make a wise-crack, y-I mean, the idea-the dream is endless. Truly.

[-] Lauchmelder@feddit.org 4 points 9 hours ago

greater toronto area or grand theft auto? i can see both

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 20 points 14 hours ago

Pretty sure different people made the film. What, are they supposed to be proud so it's more fun to hate them?

[-] dubs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 11 hours ago

I think the film would have been much "better" if we showed the horror and devistation that we caused. American media purposefully hides the death and destruction that we do, and paints ourselves as the good guys.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 7 points 11 hours ago

I really agree. For genuinely talking about the senseless horror of those bombings, especially the callous afterthought that was Nagasaki, I prefer Dan Carlin's podcast series.

[-] BigBenis@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Grave of the Fireflies should be on every American school's curriculum.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 10 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

On the one hand, yes, it's different people. That said, this particular movie specifically chose to hide the damage to victims and solely focus on the emotions of the man who enabled the tragedy. I'm all for stories of people trying to redeem themselves, but deliberately ignoring the victims was a bad choice, imo.

[-] Enekk@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

One gripe I have with the film is that none of it focuses on the poor, mostly Hispanic, population that lived in New Mexico at the time. These people had their land taken from them (their sole source of generational wealth) and died of horrific cancers post-tests. I think most of history just pretends nobody lived out there.

Here's just one article about it

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 2 points 11 hours ago

Really?

...Shit, I guess I need to actually see this film before I talk about it. I assumed it was mere Oscar-bait and just absorbed information about it osmotically. I wasn't even mad at them, just thought oh, they found a guy who looks exactly like David Byrne, of course they wanted him for their Oscar bait film.

Those are not the choices I would have made if I was telling a story about the guy who built the bomb. I would have probably drawn a lot more from sources like Barefoot Gen, myself.

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

they found a guy who looks exactly like David Byrne

You may ask yourself
Why the big bomb?

[-] NonconfrontationaI@lemmy.ml 4 points 13 hours ago

They're not supposed to melt the civilians.

[-] Tango@piefed.ca 10 points 13 hours ago

Pretty sure Christopher Nolan did not, in fact, melt any civilians.

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 12 points 11 hours ago

He got lazy and used CGI. Directors these days, no sense of what makes a good movie.

[-] TipRing@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Kubrick would have melted some actors.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 6 points 12 hours ago

You're conflating the people who did that and the people who made a movie, if you want to throw a "nukes are a war crime" party I'm already on the guest list, but your comment reads like you're talking shit about people who don't like nukes and didn't nuke anybody, are you confused about that?

[-] NonconfrontationaI@lemmy.ml -4 points 10 hours ago

Yes. Americans. I'm sorry you're having difficulty with this.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 9 hours ago

Disingenuous username much?
