NZ Lemmy Communities (self.support)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 3 months ago) by Dave to c/support

Not all NZ content is on this instance, so I thought it would be helpful to create a list of NZ focused communities (with some level of filtering) to help people find what they are looking for.

Links are handled a bit weird at the moment in Lemmy. These communities will be linked to the Lemmy.nz page for the community, to make it easier for our users to subscribe. If you’re on another instance, the page will give you a community address to copy to the search bar of your instance, e.g. “!support@lemmy.nz”. Copy this to the search form, click search, and wait 5-10 seconds for it to show up (quicker if someone else has searched before you).

Communities marked as (new) may not have much content yet.

If you have found any others that are starting to get traction or would make a good complement to these, then reply below!

The access to medical cannabis in NZ is very new and correct information is very hard to come by. Businesses are not allowed to advertise products, pharmacies are not allowed to advertise stock levels, etc etc.

Currently the de facto space for the medical cannabis community in NZ to disseminate correct information is through the MedicalCannabisNZ community on reddit.

It would be amazing if we had a fediverse equivalent.

See URL, I can't seem to find this community. I tried with the whole URL as well as the title.

55

But it's quite active, see https://lemmy.ml/c/xbox Is this a bug?

56

https://lemmy.nz/post/32375 was showing the below at some stage, as well as different title and content and content changing

https://lemmy.nz/post/58520 seems to be a report of the same bug on lemmy.world

Hi all, thanks for all the feedback today. I have put together this code of conduct as a starting point. We can of course modify it over time as needs change, but it would be good to hear if this is on point based on the discussion, or if it needs more work.

Based on suggestions in the feedback thread, I'm proposing this does not go in the sidebar itself. Instead, we keep the current rule "Don't be a dick", and link to this code of conduct. A simple, single rule; more clarity for those that need it.

Please let me know what you think:

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.tgxn.net/post/11707

I made this website to crawl and display Lemmy instances since the existing ones were lacking certain filtering and search options.

I have licensed it as MIT and the code is on https://github.com/tgxn/lemmy-explorer

Let me know if there's any issues, and create a GitHub issue if you want some features :D

I am trying to find a community I created on lemmy.tf but nothing shows up. I created it yesterday night. Community is called guineapigs@lemmy.tf

Could it be that lemmy.tf and lemmy.nz are not federated? Does it take time for a new community to populate to the different instances search.

I am trying Lemmy for the first time, and have subscribed to a community on another instance as a test (https://sopuli.xyz/c/homebrewing).

I can see the posts come though, but few if any of the comments are there. Obviously if I visit the community directly they show up, but then I can't post/comment as my account is with this instance.

There has been a lot of discussion about what we should or should not allow in our community. This is not a thread to tell you about a decision, this is a thread to ask your opinion about what is acceptable, and collate this in one place.

We want this to be a friendly and welcoming community to all who are friendly and welcoming. This means a necessary amount of tolerance for those with other points of view. It also means that by definition we can't have people here that are intolerant of others.

Anyone who has been here for a while knows I am loathe to create a list of what is and isn’t allowed, because I feel that most of it is obvious, and the stuff that isn’t obvious is not simple enough to create a list. But I’ll list some things that I feel aren’t necessary to list, because others think it is necessary. This is not a complete list.

In our friendly community, we obviously don’t allow:

  • Things that are illegal for us to host
  • Doxing
  • Hate speech or other attacks on others
  • Spamming
  • Trolling

Now the question is: what’s ok in our community, and how should we respond? I’m gonna number them for ease of following.

  1. Is it ok to attack public figures? e.g. is it ok to say “Christopher Luxon is an idiot”? “David Seymour is a fascist prick”? “Gareth Morgan should fuck off and die”?

  2. Does it count as doxing if the information is public? How public?

  3. Are derogatory terms or hateful comments for people known for hate ok? Or do these attitudes contribute to an unfriendly atmosphere? i.e. is it ok to say “Kyle chapman is a fucking nazi”?

  4. If what appeared as a genuine discussion turned out to be sealioning or similar, what kind of mod action should happen? Ban the user, leave the posts? Temporary or permanent ban? Ban the user and remove the posts?

  5. Similar to 4, are we ok that anything in the obviously list above is removed on sight? Should a trolling post be locked, or completely removed?

  6. Is there anything not mentioned yet that you feel should not be allowed, should be encouraged, or that would help turn this community into the kind of place you want to visit?

  7. And finally, there have been a lot of voices on this point. Although I’ve made it clear this isn’t what I want, I feel it’s not for me to force on people: Do you think we need an explicit list of rules that state the above?

Over the last week I have heard a lot of concern over the approach that I have been taking to date: We're all adults here (mostly), and we are a small enough group that we can talk though disagreements as long as people approach them in good faith. In my view this is working, the only negative attitudes I have seen are from people not liking this approach.

However, I have heard from many people with more experience at building communities, and they have raised a lot of concern about this approach. Therefore I am willing to hear what the community is looking for in a Lemmy instance, and willing to change the approach if that's what people want.

I'm listening, so give me your feedback.

country: USA for lemmy.nz ! (the-federation.info)
submitted 1 year ago by bevan to c/support

Now this is incredibly minor so drop it to the bottom of your 'to do' list, but for some reason the country is set to USA for lemmy.nz on the Federation info site.

Perhaps a default config somewhere, or interpreted from cloudflare?

64

As far as I've been able to find so far there's only one Rugby community and it seems to be on an instance that might be mostly spam bots.

I know its not everyone's cup of tea, but given tis a big popular topic in NZ it might be nice if we hosted the community? Just a thought.

65

Just had this happen on my instance, wondering if any body has seen the same here? Warning

66

We no doubt have a large amount people here interested in the outdoors, I would like to formally request an "outdoors" thread be created for this instance?

67

Kbin.social looks to have some of the magazines/communities I’m interested in that aren’t currently hosted on lemmy but the links don’t seem to be propagating.

In theory we should be able to subscribe as we’re federated with them. Has anyone managed to get it working?

Website error (self.support)

Edit: This has been fixed. Thank you admins.

~~If you visit lemmy.nz via http rather than https, you get a Bad Gateway error. It should be redirecting to the https url. Not sure who's in charge of the domain and server, but it can usually be done in either of those places.~~

Moderation (self.support)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Dave to c/support

We are now over 200 users and may see significantly more in the coming days and weeks.

Our instance is new, Lemmy is new to most of us, and there just isn't the history needed to approach appropriate people and ask them to be moderators. So I'm taking applications instead.

It's worth noting that moderation has not been an issue for us so far, but I'd like to be prepared.

There are two types of moderators I'm looking for. It will be easier to find the first than the second, so for the first type I'm keen to find people not in an NZ time zone to cover times when NZ is normally asleep. The types I've after are:

  1. Remove obviously not allowed content:
  • Trolling or posts obviously trying to cause harm
  • Animal abuse
  • CSAM
  • Doxing and violations of court ordered name suppressions
  • Any other content illegal in NZ
  1. Grey area moderators

Rather than just banning people that don't agree, I want to foster a community where everyone that wants to participate in good faith can, regardless of their views. I want this to be a community where everyone feels safe to be themselves. This can sound contradictory, but as long as we can attack ideas and not people, I believe there is a possibility to find our spot somewhere along this path.

This means that I don't want to ban users that use derogatory terms, I want it to be the start of a discussion about why they are hurtful. I don't want to remove racist comments, I want it to be the start of a discussion about what is and isn't acceptable in our community. If everyone acts in good faith, we should be able to have these discussions respectfully. If people start commenting in bad faith, then this may require more traditional moderator interventions (e.g. temporary or permanent bans, and potential removal of content). Note that moderator actions are transparent, and listed in the "Modlog" linked at the bottom of every page (this includes moderator actions on other instances to some extent).

So I am taking applications from people willing to facilitate the discussions for this second type of content. I recognise this is a much bigger burden than the first type, but I hope we will have some volunteers willing to give it a go.

If you want to volunteer, note that a requirement will be that you're willing and able to join a private Matrix chat room for moderators and admins where discussion can happen. This will be helpful for type 1 moderators too, in case there is confusion over what is type 1 content.

Note that moderators can be by community. If you're keen to moderate e.g. just !wellington@lemmy.nz, then please include this in your "application".

No need for life stories, just comment on your interest and, if relevant, some history or background of your moderation activities. You can reply here or DM me if you don't want to post publicly, either is fine.

As above.

Planned downtime (self.support)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Dave to c/support

Hi again, as previously mentioned, I hope to attempt to migrate to a new server tomorrow morning.

This will involve downtime, however, remember Lemmy has many nodes. You can jump over to beehaw.org or lemmy.ml or one of the many other instances to lurk and check out some of their content. You can read posts but your lemmy.nz account won't work until we are up again. And you (probably) can't read lemmy.nz posts.

Feel free to also hop onto the Matrix chat room here: https://matrix.to/#/#lemmynz:matrix.org

I'll also put the chat in the side bar. This gives us another avenue of communication, and a chance to have a(n even) less formal chat. Of course course you'll want to grab this link before we go offline (sorry it's late posting it and likely to be early downtime - depending on when I wake up).

Kia ora!

What’s the plans for moderation on this instance? I guess there’s probably going to be a bit of a flood from the NZ-oriented subreddits and this seems like a smart landing place for them.

Lemmy.ml apparently has owners with weird political beliefs, and this is putting a bunch of people off. Is there going to be a set of rules/CoC for this instance?

Also, servers cost money. Any plans for adding a way for users to support the server?

Thanks for setting it up!
